In a move to broaden its energy sources and transition to cleaner power generation, Saudi Arabia has expressed its interest in exploring small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) technology. As the largest oil producer in the Middle East, the kingdom seeks to diversify its energy mix for both domestic consumption and potential export.
Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the Saudi Energy Minister, acknowledged that the nation is a relative newcomer to nuclear power but aims to comprehensively study various types and applications of atomic energy generation. Speaking at a climate conference in Riyadh, he highlighted Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing its nuclear program, which includes the construction of a test reactor and a desire for US collaboration in this endeavor.
This announcement comes as the Persian Gulf region, including OPEC members like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, increasingly focus on environmental sustainability and combating climate change. While they invest in renewable energy sources like solar power and carbon-capture technologies, they continue to expand their oil production capacity.
Prince Abdulaziz emphasized the enduring role of oil and gas in the global energy landscape. He stated, "There is a case for us to continue to be in oil and to continue to be in gas," acknowledging that while their share may diminish, they remain integral components of the overall energy system. He pointed out that global energy demand could double by mid-century, underlining the importance of a diversified energy portfolio.
The UAE Energy Minister, Suhail Al Mazrouei, echoed this sentiment, stating that investing in oil, gas, and alternative energy supplies demonstrates the region's commitment to being responsible global energy suppliers.
In addition to exploring nuclear energy, Saudi Arabia is actively investigating geothermal energy, particularly in the western regions of the country, which are distant from conventional fossil fuel resources. The nation is also developing carbon capture capabilities as part of its strategy to reduce emissions.
As the energy landscape evolves and concerns about global economic stability persist, Saudi Arabia and its allies within OPEC and Russia continue to balance their efforts to support energy prices and eliminate excess crude oil inventories.
