ABS Grants Approval in Principle for Floating Offshore Nuclear Power Barge
ABS, a global leader in marine and offshore classification services, has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for the innovative design of a floating offshore nuclear power barge. This project is a collaborative effort between HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), KEPCO Engineering and Construction Company, Inc. (KEPCO E&C), ABS, and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR).
The concept behind this floating small modular reactor (SMR) barge is to provide offshore power generation capabilities to remote communities and support island electrification efforts. The basic designs for the marine systems were contributed by HD KSOE, after which ABS and LISCR conducted thorough design reviews, ensuring compliance with class and statutory requirements.
KEPCO E&C is set to continue its involvement in the project by focusing on risk assessments for future applications, further solidifying the commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable energy solutions.
