Electricity production at the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant, Europe's largest nuclear unit, faced an interruption over the weekend due to a turbine fault, according to operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO). The fault, identified as a malfunctioning temperature measurement in the generator's cooling system, triggered an automatic halt in production on Sunday at 19:10.
While initial estimates suggested the unit would resume operation by noon on November 21, TVO has not provided an update as of the latest information. The first two units at the Olkiluoto facility, OL 1 and OL 2, are reported to be producing at maximum capacity, while OL3 is currently showing zero megawatts on the company's website.
The company assured that the incident had no impact on nuclear safety. OL3, which started production in April this year, contributes approximately 14% of Finland's electricity demand. Following the necessary repairs and inspections, the unit is expected to return to normal operation, highlighting the importance of swift responses to maintain the reliability of nuclear power plants.
